Two Members of Parliament, some politicians and some members of the public were arrested last night in Hdh. Hondaidhoo, an island leased for resort development, under suspicion of alcohol consumption.
Sun Online understands that Henveiru-dhekunu MP Hamid Abdul Gafoor, Kaashidhoo MP Abdullah Jabir and former Special Advisor to the President Ibrahim Hussain Zaki are among those who were arrested.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed said in a Tweet this morning that former Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair was also among those arrested last night, and called for their release.
Police Media Official Hassan Haneef said that some people were arrested in Hdh. Hondaidhoo following suspicion of alcohol consumption last night, under an ongoing Police operation.
Haneef did not indicate the number of people that were arrested, or reveal any other details.
Hdh. Hondaidhoo was previously inhabited, but people were moved to Hdh. Hanimaadhoo in 1997 under the government's population centralisation policy.
The island was leased to Abdullah Jabir's Yacht Tours Company in 2003 for 21 years, for the development of a resort.
