Parliament Members waste time: President

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik said that Members of Parliament (MPs), instead of attending to important issues, waste time at the Parliament.

The President made this remark while addressing the people of R. Kinolhas yesterday.

“A group of people have tried to remove the President from his post. Why? One reason is that the President criticised how MPs work. Some people believe that there is no leader in the Maldives right now, that there are several same-level leaders in the Maldives. So everyone runs the State as they want to. The leader should not say anything. As soon as he does say something, he should be removed from his post.

“...They decide their own salaries, pass legislations with no consideration for the consequences on the State budget. Once the legislations are passed, the State budget has to be spent on them. We have to ask the question, is this what Maldivians want?”

In addition to Kinolhas, the President also visited Fainu, Inguraidhoo and atoll capital Ungoofaaru as part of his current visit to Raa Atoll.

While addressing the people of Inguraidhoo yesterday afternoon, the President announced that an airport will be opened in Raa Atoll next year.
