Tree Top Hospital commence use of inhaled analgesia for labour pain relief

Tree Top Hospital has successfully commenced the use of inhaled analgesia for pain relief during labour.

The administration was led by Anesthesiologist at the hospital Dr Dusooma Abdul Razzaq.

Dr Razzaq earned her  Medical Degree from Crimea State Medical University, Ukraine. Thereafter, she pursued her Master’s Degree in Anesthesiology and Intensive care from the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Kathmandu, Nepal.

This marks the first time pain relief for labour was given in this manner.

As per the hospital, fewer methods of pain relief for labour are used in Maldives compared to other countries.

The gas is used for this is nitrous oxide, which is administered via inhalation with the use of a facemask.

Tree Top stated that the biggest advantage of using nitrous oxide was that it works faster than injections and is easier for patients to move about even with it.

According to the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health, “Nitrous oxide labour analgesia is safe for the mother, fetus, and neonate and can be made safe for caregivers. It is simple to administer, does not interfere with the release and function of endogenous oxytocin, and has no adverse effects on the normal physiology and progress of labour” (Rooks, 2011).

Tree Top Hospital has continued to introduce new services with the latest technologies to Maldives.
