A legal representative of the former president told Sun the defense team was informed on Monday that the verdict would be issue on June 30.
Meanwhile, the verdict in the money laundering and bribery case against Yameen in connection to V. Aarah was moved up from November 25 to June 30.
Yameen is accused of taking a USD 1.1 million bribe for the lease of Fuggiri, and laundering the money through Sun Contruction and Engineering Pvt. Ltd. and Sun Investment Pvt. Ltd.
Both Sun Construction and Engineering and Sun Investment have denied the allegation.
When asked about the decision to push up verdicts in the cases against Yameen, his lawyer Adam Asif told Sun they believed the decision was influenced by the decision was influenced by the government, Judicial Service Commision and Parliament’s Judiciary Committee.
“Managing directors of some of the state-owned enterprises have stated President Yameen would be imprisoned before Ramadan. And the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee was recalled for an extraordinary meeting to expedite President Yameen’s case, and decided to summon parties involved to the committee. This can be considered nothing other than exerting influence,” he said.
The opposition also believe the government is attempting to imprison Yameen in order to stop the ‘India Out’ campaign.
Yameen had previously been sentenced to prison for laundering USD 1 million from the sale of GA. Vodamula. However, the conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court in November last year.
