Six arrested with contraband to be smuggled into jail

Maldives Police Service has arrested six individuals in possession of contraband likely to have been readied to smuggle inside jail from Hulhumale’ Phase II.

The arrest was made during an operation carried out by Hulhumale’ Police this morning.

A Police Spokesperson detailed that the contraband was seized in an operation carried out after arresting two individuals carrying a safe amidst patrolling Hulhumale’ Phase II.

In this regard, the two individuals carrying the safe who climbed a tower in Phase II had discarded the safe and tried to run upon seeing Police. The two individuals were stopped and searched – as well as the safe. However, nothing was discovered.

The Police had further questioned the two individuals and carried out a successful operation which saw the arrest of four additional persons with contraband suspected to be stored inside the safe from an apartment in Phase II.

Contraband seized included 18 mobile phones, 28 chargers, 28 headsets, 10 memory cards and 12 sim cards. Police said that additional items were seized from the apartment.

They also noted that the investigation so far indicates that the items were readied to be smuggled into jail.

Police identified those arrested in the case as an 18-year-old, four 20-year-olds and a 24-year-old.

Hulhumale’ Police Station is investigating the case further.
