State Electric Company (STELCO) has begun supplying water produced from the company’s RO plants in K. Gaafaru for the general use of the island’s residents.
Gaafaru Council’s president Mubashir Jaleel told Sun that the service was a huge convenience to the people of the island, as they face a shortage in clean water.
“We have run out of drinking water in the island. With the launch of this service by STELCO, the island’s residents now have easy access to water,” he said.
Mubashir said Gaafaru had always faced water shortages, and have no other option but to bring in water shipments from Male’ each time.
STELCO has built two RO plants in Gaafaru. The company said they began supplying water to the island’s residents on Sunday under specific rules.
STELCO said the water system in Gaafaru isn’t currently linked to households.
Water is therefore needs to be collected from taps outside the RO plants.
Each resident can take up to 20 liters of water free of charge each day.
The service is available from 04:00 pm to 06:00 pm.
