Male' City Council on Tuesday made the decision to re-open the application for the 211 parking slots opened for four-wheelers in Male' City after cancelling the previous announcement.

As per the City Council, the decision was made due to administrative mix-ups by the council of the forms submitted by applicants. Due to this, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) ordered to re-take applications for the parking slots.

However, in the announcement, the council did not specify a date for this.

In July 2021, Male' City Council first announced to apply for the 211 parking slots from 10 different areas for 350kg pickups and vans. Following this, on December 5, a draw was taken among 965 applicants, but accusations of corruption soon followed and the case was even submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Subsequently, the City Council announced the decision to re-take draws on December 16, with the Mayor of Male’ City Dr Mohamed Muizzu admitting that there were issues with the parking slot draw. At the time, he stated that both the council and ACC had flagged administrative issues. However, Dr Muizzu noted that ACC did not indicate corruption being a part of it.

The Council announced that the re-taking would be held on December 21, after working to solve all the errors noted. This time, they invited applicants to partake in the draw-taking process as well.

However, on December 20, the City Council made another announcement, postponing the draw to complete administrative matters.

They noted that a large number of individuals have applied for the slots, hence they are delaying the retake to complete the administrative works pertaining to it to their best capacity. In addition to this, they said that a lot of applicants may not be in Male’ right now as it is the school holidays.
