The Parliament has endorsed the reappointment of Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Baree as Islamic Minster for the third time.
Dr Majeed’s reappointment was disapproved by The Government Accountability Committee, and the issue passed on to Parliament for the final decision. The endorsement was approved by the vote of 38 out of 75 members present at today’s Parliament meeting. 35 members voted against the endorsement. The number of votes necessary for his reappointment is 37.
Several opposition parties, including DRP, had previously said that they will not endorse Dr Majeed’s reappointment. Several opposition members at the Parliament voted against it, however, the ruling party MDP holds majority at the Parliament.
Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Baree was reappointed as Islamic Minister for the third time on 9 October, after he resigned from the post on 29 September due to Adhalath Party breaking coalition ties with the ruling party, MDP.
Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Baree was appointed as Islamic Minister by President Nasheed when he first became President. Dr Majeed was appointed to the same post for a second time in July 2010, after President Nasheed’s entire cabinet resigned on 29 June 2010,
