Parliament has passed to dissolve Maldives Transport Authority.

The bill to dissolve the Transport Authority was submitted to the Parliament by Vaikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad, on behalf of the government.

The bill was passed by the unanimous vote of the 52 parliamentarians who were present for the voting tonight.

Government proposed to dissolve Transport Authority citing that there were discrepancies between the work carried out by Transport Ministry and the Authority. It has been decided that the work carried out by the Transport Authority will be transferred to Transport Ministry, after it is dissolved.

Prior to this, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that the structural changes which will be brought to the Transport Ministry after the Authority is dissolved, will make the operations of the Ministry much faster and smoother.

He further said that if vehicle registration processes are transferred to local councils under decentralization, the main government will be eased. He added that his administration was working towards achieving this.

Whilst the President has stated this, it has been a long time since Transport Authority’s operations and services including the issuance of licenses have been ceased – which has also triggered a public protest.
