Petition against GMR to be presented to President

Efforts are underway by the Civil Society Coalition, as part of the coalition’s activities aimed at reclaiming the airport from its current operator GMR, to present a petition against GMR to the President.

Senior officials of the parties included in the coalition signed the petition at an event held this afternoon at Artificial Beach.

The turnout was poor in spite of the event having been announced in advance.

Speaking to reporters at Artificial Beach, Vice President of Civil Society Coalition and Minister of State for Home Affairs Abdullah Mohamed said that the target is to collect a hundred thousand signatures within two weeks.

Activities to sign the petition will be held in different parts of Male’ as well as in the atolls.

“We are trying to arrange a meeting with the Board of Directors of Airports Company tomorrow. We are also trying to meet ACC and the President,” he said.

When asked by Sun Online how much has been achieved in terms of reclaiming the airport from GMR, Abdullah Mohamed said that great progress had been made in this regard.

He said that the issue has gained the attention of the Maldivian people, and that the government is now compelled to make a decision on the matter.

Abdullah Mohamed said that various activities will be held this week as well, to reclaim the airport from GMR.
