Maldives partners with India’s CAG Office to improve public audit

The Auditor General’s Office of Maldives and the Comptroller and Office of the Auditor General of India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to increase collaboration in areas of mutual interest to enhance the professional capacity of both the institutions and improve their methodologies in the field of public audit.    

The MOU was signed by Auditor General of Maldives, Hussain Niyazy and Comptroller and Auditor General of India, Girish Chandra Murmu - who is on an official visit to Maldives at Niyazy’s invitation - on Sunday. 

Auditor General’s Office of the Maldives and the Office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India established formal ties with a signing of an MOU in 2008. 

Under the new MOU signed on Sunday, the two institutions agreed to conduct training programs in their respective countries for their staff on a need basis and explore other means of capacity development support, and cooperate on areas of mutual benefit.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Niyazy said that the workload of the Auditor General’s Office has increased over the years, and expressed appreciation to the support from the Office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India in helping the Auditor General’s Office of Maldives build and develop the capacity of its staff. 

Murmu, in his speech, said that the biggest purpose of the MOU is to affect sustainable development. 

He expressed confidence that MOU will enable the two institutions to work together to strengthen professional capacity and improve methodologies in the field of audit of public finance.  

The MOU is designed to bring greater flexibility and dynamism in knowledge transfer and cooperation between the Auditor General’s Office of the Maldives and the Office of Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
