Holding phone while driving punishable with fine

Maldives has banned drivers from holding phones and other electronic devices while driving. 

The ban was imposed with the General Regulation on Land Transport publicized on Monday. 

Article 13 of the regulation declares both the use and holding of mobile phones and other communication devises while driving vehicles as prohibited. 

The regulation also prohibits drivers from using a headset or talking on the phone with the help of a passenger. 

Drivers found in violation of the regulation are punishable with a fine of MVR 500 and a reprimand for the first violation. Second-time violations are punishable with an MVR 750 fine and a 48-hour suspension of license. And repeat violators are punishable with an MVR 1,000 fine and their vehicle will be towed for 15 days.
