Transport Ministry, on Sunday, has amended the regulation on the issuance of license for land vehicles, now requiring people with special needs aged 60 and above to obtain a special license in order to drive four-wheeled vehicles like cars.
As per the amended regulation published by the Ministry, a special license can be issued to people with special needs upon turning 60.
However, the license will only be issued upon completion of a special training program. Moreover, the license will only cover vehicles such as motorcycles and autocycles below 60cc and island pickups.
Special license holders can only drive on the island where the licensing authority is based.
They cannot drive on roads with a speed limit exceeding 30 kilometers per hour. As such, individuals with the special license cannot drive on any bridges or highways in the Maldives.
According to the regulation, if a holder of the special license commits multiple traffic violations, the Ministry or the licensing authority has the discretion to revoke their license.
