The main ruling party – Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) – has stated that the party has, and never will tolerate undue influence on judges and court cases.

In a statement released by MDP in response to the press conference held yesterday by former judges and lawyers – they stressed that the party has always believed matters pertaining to influencing judges are extremely serious.

“This party has always viewed the lowly actions of any person who tries to influence a judge or a court case, as extremely serious. Such actions are not something this party will tolerate,” the statement read.

MDP also stated that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has never influenced a court case – and gave the Party’s full assurance to that regard.

In the statement, the Party also alleged that the press conference held yesterday by former judges and lawyers was done so to create doubts amongst people regarding former President Yameen Abdul Gayyoom’s trial. They also added that the allegations made by the judges regarding the trial during yesterday’s press conference were completely baseless.

MDP also raised concerns over the overall remarks made by the judges in yesterday’s press conference.

They also called upon the Police to launch investigations against those who try to influence judges – and subsequently, take action against them.

A statement has also been released by Adhaalath Party regarding the press conference held yesterday by former judges and lawyers – where they have alleged that the reputations of judges are being attacked in order to influence court cases.
