President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that in spite of the previous government’s decision to relocate the people of Rin’budhoo to another island, the current government will only make a decision on this matter after considering the wishes of the people of Rin’budhoo.
Speaking at a function in Rin’budhoo today, the President said that the decision to transfer the people of Rin’budhoo needs to be reconsidered.
“I would support the people’s decision one hundred percent,” he said.
He stressed that it is important that this decision is made soon, in order to facilitate planning of development projects for the island for next year.
The President mentioned that the island’s power station will be transferred to Fenaka Corporation, and that the Island Council has been informed of this decision.
Meedhoo MP Ahmed Shiyam said in his speech at the function that development can only be achieved by setting aside political ideas, and focusing on the right issues.
He said that the President will not force the people of Rin’budhoo to migrate against their will.
Shiyam said that the President is willing to work for the benefit of the people, and expressed confidence that the harbour construction project for the island will commence soon.
The President also met with the Councillors of Rin’budhoo today, to better understand the wishes of the people.
