Akram Kamaluddin to be allowed to contest in MDP National Council elections

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has revised their earlier decision to disqualify State Minister for Housing Akram Kamaluddin from contesting in the party’s upcoming National Council elections – and ultimately have decided to allow him to contest.

Akram’s disqualification has been attributed as a case is submitted against him at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in connection to the MMPRC graft scandal – whereas he has been listed as one of the alleged beneficiaries of the stolen funds from MMPRC.

Speaking to Sun regarding the matter, Akram had noted that he had sent a letter to the party earlier – requesting to reconsider the decision.

“In the letter I had sent earlier, I did state that the decision to disqualify me from the elections was unjust. I think they revised their decision after coming to their senses,” he had said.

The letter sent by Akram to MDP’s Chairperson Hassan Latheef, read that Akram had inquired ACC as to why his name had been listed – following which Akram claims to have them replied to him stating that ACC has no impending matters lodged against him.

He also added that he can only be disqualified from the National Council elections had ACC had requested any authority to take action against him in connection to the MMPRC scandal – whereas his name has not been sent any authority in this regard.

In disqualifying Akram from the elections, MDP had noted that they have been informed by ACC that there is a case against Akram lodged at the Commission.
