Deputy Minister at Ministry of Education Sharuma Nasir has stated that no decision has been taken to discontinue the government’s school breakfast program.

While some local media outlets have reported that the Ministry had decided to discontinue the school breakfast program – Deputy Minister Sharuma has denied these reports.

Speaking to Sun today, Sharuma noted that the Ministry is not discontinuing the school breakfast program.

“Ministry is not discontinuing the school breakfast program. No such decision has been taken,” she had said.

Sharuma also added that she is unable to give further information regarding the matter at the moment and will be available for further comment after the holidays.

The school breakfast program is one of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s electoral pledges. The government bears a huge expense to keep this program running.

Prior to this, Education Ministry has stated that the purpose of this program is to equally provide nutritious food to all students.

However, many parents have raised concern over how the program is implemented – highlighting issues such as food having gone bad when it is served to students.
