Health Protection Agency (HPA) announced on Sunday that a COVID-19 patient admitted at Sh. Atoll Covid Management Facility in Funadhoo has passed away.

HPA identified the latest fatality as a 59-year-old Maldivian female.

She passed away at 03:05 am this Sunday.

“This is the 214th COVID-19 death in the Maldives,” said HPA.

It marks the first death to be recorded from the Sh. Atoll Covid Management Facility and comes over a week after Maldives had recorded its last COVID-19 related death.

Maldives experienced an alarming surge in COVID-19 cases in May – marked by an all-time high of 88 deaths. The surge was controlled with the tightening of restrictions – especially in the populous greater Male’ area. The restrictions proved effective in controlling the surge. Daily cases, which rose above 2,000, have now dropped to under 100, allowing authorities to introduce significant easements in restrictions this July.

Maldives has 74,993 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 90 new cases recorded on Saturday. 72,118 patients have since recovered.

The country currently has 2,650 active cases. 21 of the patients are hospitalized.
