The fuel tank of a speedboat carrying tourists from V. Fulidhoo on an excursion trip exploded on Friday, leaving the captain injured.
Fulidhoo Council president Mohamed Imthiyaz told Sun that the speedboat was carrying five tourists when the fuel tank exploded.
He said that the captain sustained multiple injuries in the incident, and has been transported to Male’ City for treatment.
The incident took place at approximately 08:30 am.
“We don’t the facilities here to treat him. I am unable to say the details of the injuries. He was sent to Male’ for treatment on a sea ambulance,” said Imthiyaz.
Fulidhoo, a small picturesque island in V. Atoll, is a popular local tourism destination. The island has 15 guesthouses, but Imthiyaz said the island currently has only a handful of tourists due to the travel ban in place in the island.
