The average number of tourist arrivals to the Maldives has shrunk from 3,000 average tourists to 2,000.
At the beginning of the year, the Maldives saw an average of 3,000 tourists, however, the COVID-19 situation in India, which is the biggest source market of tourists to the Maldives as well as rise in cases in markets such as Europe as well as the worsening situation with the virus in the Maldives has led to a drop in tourist arrivals.
The Tourism Ministry said that by May 19, 435,025 tourist arrivals had been recorded in 2021. On average, tourists spent around nine days in the Maldives.
Russia has overtaken India to become the biggest source market with 99,645 tourists. India comes second with 89,301 tourists. German tourist numbers came in at third with 23,311 tourists while Ukrainian tourist arrival numbers stand at 22,978. Tourist arrivals from Kazakhstan stood at 16,603.
The government of the Maldives is aiming to attract a million tourists in 2021. However, the pandemic and its effects have seen a massive drop in the number of tourist arrivals from important major markets.
