The island of Lh. Naifaru confirmed 40 more cases of COVID-19 yesterday, according to the Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC).

The Maldives confirmed 318 cases in the last 24 hours and 130 of these cases confirmed from inhabited islands apart from the congested capital.

Naifaru alone confirmed 40 cases of the virus while K. Thulusdhoo confirmed 12 cases. The island of Aa. Ukulhas also confirmed 19 cases.

Naifaru currently has 155 active cases, according to the Lh. Atoll Hospital. More than 393 cases have been confirmed from the island since the first case was confirmed on March 23.

In addition to Naifaru, all the populated islands of Lh. Atoll are under monitoring mechanisms due to confirmed cases. The major outbreak in the industrial island of Felivaru is believed to be the source of the virus to the atoll.

Lh. Atoll was also the location of the first confirmed case of the virus in the Maldives back in March 2020. The first case was detected from the resort of Lh. Kuredhdhoo or Kuredu Island Resort.

The Maldives has confirmed a total of 29,730 cases of the virus after almost a year of the pandemic. 73 people have passed away from the virus.
