A total of 63 people have tested positive for COVID-19 from the island of AA. Mathiveri, the island's health center has confirmed.
The island currently has 82 cases of COVID-19 and was initially placed under monitoring mechanisms on April 21.
The Health Center has previously said that the first cases on the island were those who tested after becoming symptomatic for the virus.
The source of the virus has not yet been determined but contact tracing and sample collection are still underway on the island, according to the center.
Three people who traveled from Mathiveri to H. Dh. Hanimaadhoo have also tested positive for COVID-19. Hanimaadhoo is also currently under monitoring due to the cases.
Mathiveri is a popular local tourism hotspot, and during the recently held local council elections, a number of people traveled to local islands to vote after easements were introduced by the health authorities for the elections. Officials of some islands with active cases have speculated that the election travels may have caused the virus to spread to their islands.
