MDP holds march calling for judicial reform

Members of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) have marched the streets of Malé this evening, accusing the judicial system of Maldives of being biased, and calling for its reform.

The main activities at the march, which began from Usfasgandu, were playing songs accusing the current government of having seized power by conducting a coup, and calling for the arrest of some senior government officials.

Participants of the march called for the arrest of President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim and Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed.

Calls for the reform of the judicial system were seldom heard at the protest, even though this was the main purpose of the protest. Participants argued that the fairness of the judicial system was lost when the current government took over, and started influencing the system.

Among the participants were members of parliament and ministers of former President Nasheed’s government.

The march was peaceful and was concluded at Usfasgandu.
