President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has said that in order to improve the level of education, the allowances and privileges provided to teachers will be studied and reviewed.
The President made this statement while speaking at Dharubaaruge last night at the Teachers Award ceremony.
“The basic action to take, in order to improve the level of education, is to improve the standard of teachers. And increase the assistance provided to teachers. In order to encourage teachers, I will revise and work towards improving the allowances given to them,” he said
The President assured that the government will do everything possible to produce educated youth, and to strengthen the educational institutions in the country.
He said that the current education system is in need of improvement, as it was established several years ago.
He stressed that the new curriculum put together by the government should be implemented soon, in order to ensure that students who obtain education through the system are productive and contribute to the betterment of the nation. He said that this can only be achieved by providing further training to teachers.
The President noted that one of the biggest problems faced by many students in the Maldives, is that they cannot pursue education after Grade 10.
“One of the biggest problems for youth today is that they have to stop studying when they reach Grade 10. They finish school at the age of 16. My hope is that the education system is changed, such that every child gets to go to school until they are 18, and that they become productive and useful individuals,” he said.
He said that several school buildings require renovation and upgrading, and said that the government will cooperate with the Education Ministry to achieve this in the near future.
The President urged all employees of the education sector to work towards strengthening the education and discipline provided to students.
