Vice President of Qaumee Party Riyaz Rasheed has left the party.
Secretary General of Qaumee Party Abdullah Ameen said today that Riyaz’s letter informing that he had left the party had been received at the party office. He did not provide any further details.
Riyaz is the only representative of Qaumee Party, which is in coalition with Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), at the Parliament.
It has not been possible to find out his reason for leaving the party, as he did not answer his phone at press time.
However, while speaking at today’s sitting of the parliament, Riyaz said “the party that I represented earlier” when referring to Qaumee Party, implying that he had already left the party.
Following this comment by Riyaz, Parliamentary Group Leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Ali Waheed raised a point of order, to which Speaker of Parliament Abdullah Shahid responded that the parliament had not yet been informed that Riyaz had left Qaumee Party.
