Discussions held to reopen schools next year

Discussions have been held between the officials of the Education Ministry, COVID-19 Technical Advisory Group (TAG) and the Health Protection Agency (HPA) over the reopening of schools next year.

Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali and officials of TAG and HPA took part in the discussions. Safety measures that can be put in place once schools are reopened, were among the discussion topics at the meeting as well as the challenges faced in running schools observed this year. 

Due to COVID-19, schools in the Maldives were closed in March. They were permitted to reopen after the lockdown on the capital was eased in July. In Male’ City, schools were reopened for higher grades only, with lower grades taught through online methods. 

School children are currently on holiday after the first term of this year was concluded on December 3. The second term is expected to begin on January 10. 

The next academic year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its implications will be commenced on August 10.
