Many Maldivians believe political parties are reason for democracy failure

A survey conducted by the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives has shown that many Maldivians believe that political parties are the reason why democracy in the Maldives is obstructed from succeeding. 

The survey named “Reflective 15 years – The Rights’ , ‘Side of Life’ conducted by the HRCM over the situation of human rights in the Maldives and to find out ways on how to improve the situation, showed that corruption was also one of the main reasons why the Maldivian democracy cannot succeed. 

Around 21 percent of the participants believe that corruption had led to the failure of democracy while 20 percent of the participants believed that political parties were the reason for the failure. 

Lack of improvement in the work of the legislature was also a reason for the obstructions of a successful democracy cited by 12 percent of the participants. 

Among the survey participants, 86 percent believed that it was imperative to be aware of the rights granted under the Constitution of the Maldives but only around 20 percent of the participants had read the Constitutional chapter for basic rights. 

A total of 36.5 percent were able to name five basic human rights which is a reduction of 8.5 percent when compared to 2011. 

A total of 1,601 people were interviewed randomly from across the nation for the survey.
