Maldives' population exceeds 500,000, 40% residing in capital

Statistics related to the population of the Maldives by the National Bureau of Statistics have shown that the nation has an estimated population of 557,426.

41 percent of the population lives in the capital Male’ City, which is a staggering 227,486 people. Based on atolls, the highest number of the population resides in the Male’ atoll or K. Atoll, with a total of 41,382. The figure is excluding the population of the capital area. 

The atolls with a population figure lower than 10,000 are:

  • V. Atoll: 2,688
  • M. Atoll: 6,747
  • Fuvahmulah City (Gn. Atoll): 9,873
  • F. Atoll: 5,941

A total of ten atolls have a population of between 10,000 and 20,000. They are:

  • H. A. Atoll: 17,389
  • Sh. Atoll: 15,358
  • N. Atoll: 16,706
  • Lh. Atoll: 14,370
  • A.A. Atoll: 13,638
  • Dh. Atoll: 10,635
  • Th. Atoll: 11,496 
  • L. Atoll: 16,805
  • G. A. Atoll: 14,616
  • G. Dh. Atoll: 15, 445

Five atolls have a total population of between 30,000 and 200,001. They are: 

  • H. Dh. Atoll: 23,157
  • R. Atoll: 20,297
  • B. Atoll: 21,145
  • A. Dh. Atoll: 20,248
  • Addu City: 26,635

The Maldives has a total of six regional hospitals and 14 airports as well as universities and campuses in five areas. The last census data collected in 2014 showed that the Maldives had a population of 402,071. They include 338,434 Maldivians and 63,637 foreigners.
