Ungoofaaru by-election announced

Elections Commission has announced that the by-election for R. Ungoofaaru will be held on 1 December.

Member of Parliament for Ungoofaaru Dr Afrasheem Ali was attacked with a knife and killed last Monday night.

An announcement made by Elections Commission says that individuals can express interest to contest in the by-election from 8 October until 3:00pm on 21 October 2012.

The by-election will be held on 1 December from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

Application forms to contest in the by-election will be available from fifth floor of Elections Commission from 8 to 21 October between 2:30pm and 4:30 pm.

Article 73 of the Constitution stipulates that a person elected as a Member of Parliament should not have a decreed debt which is not being paid as provided in the judgement. He should also not have been convicted of a criminal offence and served a sentence of more than twelve months, unless a period of three years has elapsed since his release.
