Speaker of the Maldivian Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has submitted his financial statement.
The statement was submitted after amendments were made to the regulations so that the financial statements of the spouses and children of parliamentarians do not have to be made public.
Statements of parliamentarians and their spouses as well as children below the age of 18 must also be submitted under the current regulations but do not have to be published on the parliament website. The statements of the parliamentarian, however, are published on the parliament website.
Nasheed had stated that he would request the financial statements of his spouse former first lady, Laila Ali as well as the statements of his two children.
The parliament regulation states that the financial statements of parliamentarians are to be submitted to the Secretary-General of Parliament before August 31, every year. The regulation was amended so that statements involving children and spouses do not have to be disclosed.
