A motion submitted by Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) deputy leader Ahmed Shiyam calling on the government to disclose details regarding loans and grants received by Maldives has been pushed out of the Parliament.

Shiyam, who serves as the parliamentary representative for Naifaru constituency, said that the situation of the Maldivian people due to the coronavirus pandemic remained dire, despite the numerous loans and grants provided by international partners to mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic.

His motion calls for the government to disclose details regarding the loans and grants, as well as how the funds are being utilized, as soon as possible.

23 parliamentarians out of 87 parliamentarians were present when the motion was called to vote on Monday. Seven parliamentarians voted in favor of the motion, while 13 voted against.

The motion therefore failed to secure enough votes to pass.

Shiyam said that Maldives has received more than MVR 24.2 billion in loans.
