Minister: Fisheries sector faces longstanding issues, it will take time to resolve

The challenges that the fisheries sector faces are longstanding ones that require both time and money to resolve, says Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam.

He made the remarks on Wednesday morning at the Masveringe Gunzaru – a fishermen’s symposium – held in R. Dhuvaafaru on occasion of the 45th Fishermen’s Day.

Speaking at the symposium, Shiyam said the event offers a valuable platform for fishermen to gather and discuss solutions to the challenges they face.

Shiyam said that the challenges facing the fisheries sector are longstanding ones that have remained unresolved for years.

He said that it will take time and a lot of investment by the state to resolve the challenges.

Shiyam noted that the country’s fisheries sector is heavily dependent on state support, posing a challenge for the administration.

This includes cash flow challenges from setting a floor price for fish purchases.

Shiyam said that despite the many challenges, the administration remains committed to addressing the longstanding concerns of fishermen.

He also provided assurance that the administration will fulfill all its pledges to fishermen before the end of the five-year presidential term.
