Parliament votes to double duties on energy drink products

The Parliament has voted in favor of increasing the duty on energy drink products.

Several changes were made to the proposed amendment for import duties by Gan MP Ahmed Wisaam. North Kulhudhuffushi MP Yasir Abdul Latheef proposed the move to double duties on energy drinks.

Currently, a duty of MVR 33.64 is collected for every liter of energy drink imported. 58 MPs voted in favor of the change to double the duty to MVR 60.55.

However, energy drink duties will still remain the same if imported through the regional ports of Kulhudhuffushi and Addu City. The parliament also passed to reduce duties on imports of products other than alcohol, pork and tobacco products imported through the regional ports.

The changes were passed by the parliament today.
