Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has announced the virtual event to kick-start Maldives tourism reopening “Maldives: The Sun Will Shine Again” reached 1.2 million people worldwide.
The four-hour Facebook Live event was held at 08:00 pm (GMT +5) on Monday.
The event began will welcome remarks by MMPRC’s Managing Director Thoyyib Mohamed, who said that the Maldives was keen on reopening its borders to tourists.
“While global restrictions have forced us to press pause on our travel plans, we are just as restless to open our borders to you. The Maldives is working tirelessly to implement both shirt-term solutions and long-term recovery goals in the wake of COVID-19,” said Thoyyib.
He also thanked the tourism industry for its support towards the government’s efforts to reopen the industry.
Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Ali Waheed, in his remarks, said that Maldives remained the best and most peaceful tourist destinations.
He said that Maldives was fully prepared to welcome back tourists to the country.
His remarks followed remarks from top tourism industry stakeholders, the unveiling of a theme song, performances and video messages from local artists, and video messages from tour operators, airlines, influencers, key-opinion leaders and celebrities from across the world.
Over 200 parties expressed their sentiments during the event, including players from the Spanish football club Celta de Vigo and top sports stars.
MMPRC said that the campaign reached 1.2 million people worldwide, and that a total of 85,000 people from different countries joined the four-hour event.
The lucky draw raffle held during the event attracted some 10,000 participants, among whom 30 lucky winners won holiday prizes sponsored by Maldivian resorts and guesthouses.
During a poll run during the event, 49 percent of people said they were already planning a trip to Maldives, and 95 percent of the people said they believe Maldives to be the safest tourism destination.
The event was hosted by MMPRC in association with the Tourism Ministry, Public Service Media (PSM), Orca Media Group and Mondhu Productions.
It is among a number of initiatives by MMPC aimed at maintaining Maldives’ virtual presence, and to boost up demand for the destination in time for the reopening of borders.
