Home Minister Imran Abdulla has said that the former President Abdulla Yameen, who is in prison after being convicted of money laundering, does not wish to travel abroad for medical purposes.

The Minister was speaking on a program of Sangu TV tonight when he said that he had in fact visited the former President to discuss medical certificates issued by doctors regarding treatment. Imran said that President Yameen has no obstructions in obtaining treatment abroad.

“However, former President Yameen does not wish to travel abroad right now to obtain medical treatment. We speak every now and then. We will provide every assistance we have to for former President Yameen and his family to travel abroad for medical treatment.” Said Imran.

He rejected statements and allegations by the opposition parties that the government was ill-treating the former President. The Home Minister went on to say that the former President was receiving better treatment in prison than what the Home Minister and others received during their time imprisoned.

“We are doing everything we can for the former President. Even now, during the difficult times of COVID-19, the former President is provided the most convenient and easiest ways to exercise and consult with doctors. On the other hand, we are taking daily updates regarding any issues, he may have.” Said the Home Minister.

Everything allowed by the law would be done for the former President, said the Home Minister.

Former President Yameen was imprisoned at the end of last year after being found guilty of money laundering.
