Islamic Ministry, on Thursday, announced an extension to the nationwide ban on mass prayers in mosques imposed to curb the spread of COVID-19 in Maldives.

Islamic Ministry announced in a tweet on Thursday afternoon that the ban will remain in place until Asr prayer on May 28.

The earlier ban had expired Asr prayer this Thursday.

The decision comes after the Director General of Public Health ordered another 14-day extension to the lockdown on the Greater Male’ Area. The disease continues to spread in Male’, and several residential islands outside the capital have also confirmed cases – linked with a travel history to Male’.

COVID-19 cases in Maldives have now risen to 968. While 40 have recovered from the disease, four have died from complications.

Islamic Ministry had advised people to remain diligent in performing daily prayers at home, and to increase sunnah prayers, recitation of the Holy Quran and other religious practices.

Islamic Ministry’s ban on mass prayers had originally applied only to the Greater Male’ Region and resort islands. It was later expanded to include Addu City and Fuvahmulah, and on April 19 - all mosques nationwide.
