The government will invest MVR 68 million in Waqf buildings across four cities and Villingili in Gaafu Alif Atoll, according to Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.

In a Facebook post accompanied by 3D renderings of the proposed buildings, Shaheem said the Waqf projects will be implemented under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s policy to expand the national Waqf system. The selected locations are Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, Thinadhoo City, Kulhudhuffushi City, and Villingili.

The investment breakdown includes MVR 23 million for Addu, MVR 15 million for Fuvahmulah, and MVR 10 million each for Thinadhoo, Kulhudhuffushi, and Villingili.

Shaheem stated that profits generated from these endowment buildings will be used to fund Islamic activities in the respective cities, including Qur’an education and religious outreach. He also announced that two additional Waqf projects will be launched in the Male' area, with benefits expected to extend nationwide.

All projects are scheduled to begin in January. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs had previously launched the City Endowment and Atoll Endowment initiative on January 4 last year. According to Shaheem, the current Waqf activities are being carried out in collaboration with city and atoll councils, and all funds generated will remain under council control.

A Waqf is a charitable endowment in Islamic law. It involves donating a building, land, or other assets for religious or social welfare, such as mosques, schools, hospitals, or housing for the poor.
