The baby in the womb of a woman admitted at GA. Vilingili Hospital for cesarean section died today, after the procedures were delayed due to the absence of an anesthetist at the hospital.
The surgery was later performed by a doctor who was brought from the neighboring Thinadhoo, but by then the baby was dead.
The incident occurred today afternoon, and the woman was an expatriate female doctor identified by the name of Maisha. According to the reports, the mother was admitted without prior notice, as she started having birth pain suddenly.
Dr. Manisha works at GA. Vilingili Hospital as a general consultant, and she had waited there without going home for delivery as Vilingili Hospital has a shortage of general consultants.
Vilingili Council President Saud Hussain said that there was a 3 hour delay before an anesthetist came from Thinadhoo.
Saud said that there has been no anesthetist at the hospital for about a year. He also said although there is a gynecologist at the hospital, absence of an anesthetist is very likely to result in similar unfortunate incidents.
