COVID-19 expenses of Maldives rise to MVR 665.4 million

The government expenditure to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives has increased to MVR 665.4 million.

The figure was published in the weekly-report of the Finance Ministry regarding the government expenditure for the pandemic virus.

The report stated that most of the money was spent on sourcing equipment such as PPE’s and medicine.

The expenditure by the Health Ministry and National Disaster Management accounted for 91.2 percent of the total expenditure, according to the report. 

Expenditure based on separate institutions shows that that the National Disaster Management spent MVR 387.3 million while the Health Ministry spent MVR 135.7 million. MVR 27.9 million was spent by the Planning Ministry while MVR 5 million was spent by the MNDF. Foreign Ministry also spent MVR 3.4 million while Nationals Social Protection Agency (NSPA) spent MVR 2.9 million. 

Funding was also sourced through different government funds. MVR 84.1 million was sourced from the Disaster Management Fund, while MVR 3 million was sourced from the Zakat Fund.

MVR 353.9 million was spent on sourcing medical equipment while a further MVR 20.7 million was spent on this equipment. MVR 110.6 million was spent on providing grants and subsidies. MVR 94.2 million was spent on sourcing the equipment for the capital expenditure of the government while MVR 45.3 million was spent on land buildings. 

MVR 32.2 million was spent on capital expenditure while MVR 6 million was spent on renovation purposes. Travel expenses of the government also stood at MVR 2.4 million.

This is the accounted expense of the government against the COVID-19 pandemic virus as of April 30.
