Prosecutor General of the Maldives Hussain Shameem has warned that when it comes to contact tracing of virus-positive patients, the only choice was to cooperate and provide accurate information to the authorities or be imprisoned.

PG Shameem said that the whole nation could not be put in danger because of one individual and that the authorities would not allow this to happen.

The statement by the PG comes after the National Emergency Operations Center, announced that one of the people who had tested positive for Covid-19 was refusing to cooperate in contact tracing, and the authorities were therefore braced to release the identity of the person tonight.

PG Shameem said that the person would have to face the law and a criminal inquiry will be commenced into the matter.

“After that, Police will seize the mobile phone of that person and collect information. A number of charges will be brought forward under the penal code. The charges may result in a sentence of more than one year.” Said Shameem who put it bluntly when he said that the individual had no choice but to speak the truth or go to jail.
