President Mohamed Nasheed has said that 750 million Rufiyaa out of this year’s budget has been spent for the development of Addu City, the southernmost Atoll of the Maldives which has recently hosted the 17th SAARC Summit.
Speaking to the press on Saturday, at the Airport, President Nasheed said that the various projects carried out to prepare Addu City for the SAARC Summit and a number of other projects carried out during the same time cost approximately 750 million.
The projects included 233 million worth development activities conducted for the Summit and others such as harbour development, drainage installation, school development and airport development.
While the President did not give any information on the amount of money spent on transport and recreation during the Summit, the Minister of Finance Ahmed Inaz said today that the details of all the expenses for the Summit would soon be revealed.
Gan Airport at Addu City says that nearly 40 million Rufiyaa had been spent on developing the Airport and building a completely new VIP Lounge. The newly built Equatorial Convention Centre, built for the Summit, alone cost 130 million Rufiyaa.
