Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) and Qawmee Party (QP) have called on the government to start immediate and independent investigations over the matter of alleged suicide by an inmate at the Maafushi Jail.
The two opposition parties joined in coalition said yesterday that the whole incident was fishy, and that there were many questions for which answers needed to be uncovered.
In a joint press conference held at DRP Office, Vice President Abdul Matheen Mohamed of QP said that the incident was proof enough for the maladministration at Maafushi Jail, and that investigations should be conducted and those who were negligent should be held accountable.
“It is not enough that the government merely says they would investigate. The whole thing should be investigated by an independent body”, said matheen.
“They have released hundreds of inmates under the Second Chance Program, and a huge budget has been allocated for the Jail. It should mean that the administration of the Jail should be easier now. However, what we see is a total failure here”, Matheed added.
DRP leaders in the conference said that the Minister of Home Affairs Hassan Afeef should resign from his post after this unexplained incident.
While the Ministry of Home Affairs said that an inmate at Maafushi Jail committed suicide yesterday, the Ministry has not given any further details about the incident.
