SH. Atoll Council by-election announced

Elections Commission has today announced by-election for the vacant seats of SH. Atoll Council. The election has been scheduled for Saturday, 31st of the coming December.

Elections Commission said today that the by-election has been decided on after two seats of the Council became vacant, after two councilors were dismissed for being absent for 7 consecutive meetings of the Council without acceptable reasons.

The two councilors dismissed are Firag Ibrahim and Abdullah Athif, both from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Four, out of the six councilors at the SH. Atoll Council, passed a resolution on 11th October 2011 to request the Elections Commission to dismiss Firag and Athif from the Council, and Elections has acted accordingly.

As per Artile 119 (B) of the Law on Decentralized Administration of the Administrative Regions of the Maldives, any Council member who is absent for 7 consecutive Council meetings without acceptable reasons would lose membership in the Council.
