The mother of Ali Waheed, Member of Parliament for Thoddu Constituency who ditched the main opposition Divehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) to join the ruling Maldivian party a few months ago, has bought a private property in Malé.

Ali Waheed has been accused of changing sides for a huge bribe, amounting to millions of money. However, he has vehemently rejected the accusations, saying that he went from the opposition side to the ruling party “with empty hands”.

However, with the new 7.9 million Rufiyaa transaction of buying real estate made by Ali Waheed’s mother, the accusations have started resounding stronger.

Zuhura Abdullah, Ali Waheed’s mother, has so far been living in Thoddu, where she has worked as a Qur’an tutor, “a profession which would make only a modest income that can never come up to lacks, let alone millions”, says an opposition member on condition of anonymity.

The property bought by Ali Waheed’s mother has been identified as M. Enzien, which is 1323 square feet in size.

According to information obtained by Sun, Ali Waheed’s mother made the payment in two installments within a month. She said today that she bought the property with the money given to her by her husband who works as a seaman. She also said that her son had not given any money to buy the property.

Ali Waheed himself bought a property for a price of 4.6 million Rufiyaa in Hulhumalé, only months after he signed for the ruling party.

Ali Waheed, who is now in Malaysia, has not been available for a comment.
