Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), on Saturday, announced it has stopped charging residents of suburban Vilimale’ on travel cards for its ferry services between Male’ City and Vilimale’.

MTCC said it made the decision in order to reduce cash and single token usage as a measure to ensure commuter safety in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has also begun extensively cleaning commuter terminals.

Commuters between Male’ and Vilimale’ have the option of either purchasing single use tokens or monthly travel cards.

Most Vilimale’ residents use travel cards, while single use tokens are used either by infrequent commuters, or Vilimale’ residents whose cards have expired and do not have sufficient funds for the immediate purchase of a new card.
