MP Eva quells rumors Covid-19 in the Maldives

Deputy speaker of Parliament and MP North Galolhu Eva Abdulla has given assurances that the government would not hide any details or provide untrue information regarding the Covid-19 disease.

MP Eva stated that she had received complaints regarding rumors that the country had two positive cases of the virus that are being covered up by the government and said that the government could not possibly believe that it could escape by lying in such a serious matter of concern.

“That is why I am saying this to assure the public that the government would not lie despite the rumors about the spread of the disease in the country,” said MP Eva.

The government was publicizing all the steps being taken to prevent the disease, including the test process, results, and information regarding anyone in quarantine over fears of the disease said MP Eva.

She blamed the previous administration for this stigma of fear in the public regarding the government hiding things.

“I have no doubts that the government would not hide the fact if the disease was identified in the Maldives,” said MP Eva.

She went on to add that not everyone who contracted the disease went into a serious state or became a fatal case and emphasized the importance of being aware of true information.

As of 3rd March (19:00hrs), CURRENTLY, there are no confirmed cases of #COVID19 in the Maldives.

What is the situation globally?

Around 93,000 cases of the disease which originated in China last December have been identified globally. The death rate from the disease currently stands at around 3000 while the number of people who have recovered after contracting the disease is number at around 50,800. The disease is thought to be fatal for those with pre-existing conditions and weaker immune systems due to old age.

Despite positive cases being identified in several countries close to the Maldives, no positive cases have been identified in the country so far.
