Maldivian authorities have launched an investigation into a woman accused of subjecting her son, a boy of 14 years of age, to repeated sexual abuse.

According to a Gender Ministry spokesperson, the crime, which took place in an island located in northern Maldives, was reported to the authority on Sunday, February 2.

The victim, along with two children born to the woman, have been removed to a safe environment, said the spokesperson.

A spokesperson from Maldives Police Service confirmed the case is also under investigation by the police.

The police spokesperson identified the suspect as a 38-year-old woman.

Special Provisions Act to Deal with Child Sex Abuse Offenders sets out special provisions to deal with child sex offenders both at investigative and trial stages.

It prescribes a prison sentence of 15 to 18 years, if the person who carried out the offense is in a position of trust over the victim.
