Kulhudhuffushi in H.Dh. atoll has been declared as a city starting from January 1, 2020. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih bestowed the designation of a city on the island today, which will make it the fourth city of the country.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih tweeted today that he had decided to give Kulhudhuffushi the status of a city, under the Decentralization Law and will be designated so starting from January 1, 2020.

Giving the city status to Kulhudhuffushi, which is a major hub in the north of Maldives, is a pledge of the administration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Under the law, an island can be declared as a city if it has a population of 10,000, a number reached by Kulhudhuffushi in November of 2018. The island's council president Abdul Latheef Hassan stated to “Sun” today that it was imperative that Kulhudhuffushi was given the status of a city since the Kulhudhuffushi council provided several services.

The residents of Kulhudhuffushi has previously expressed dismay at the fact the island would have an elected island council instead of a city council, despite promises of being designated as a city, in the upcoming local elections.
