Crime records reveal an alarming increase in theft

The crime records released by Maldives Police Service reveal a significant increase in reports of thefts in Maldives compared to the past three years.

The number of thefts had been well below the 4,000-mark over the previous three years, but surpassed the mark to reach 4,357 cases this year. It is a significant shift from 2018 which had seen the lowest theft rates over the past three years.

THEFT

  • 2019: 4,357 cases
  • 2018: 3,272 cases
  • 2017: 3,504 cases
  • 2016: 3,617 cases

Another crime which has increased is traffic violations.

TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS

  • 2019: 2,266 cases
  • 2018: 2,007 cases
  • 2017: 2,100 cases

Other crimes which were the most frequently reported to the police this year includes sexual offenses, drug offenses and muggings.

OTHER CRIMES

  • Domestic violence: 212 cases
  • Drugs: 2,098 cases
  • Gang violence/violent assault: 604 cases
  • Sexual abuse: 384 cases
  • Muggings 473 cases

The crime records reveal a drop in cases of gang violence and violent assault compared to previous years. From 771 cases in 2017, to 752 cases in 2018, and to 604 cases so far this year.
