Islamic Ministry says it is working on opening the Maaveyo Mosque in time for the holy month of Ramadan in 2020.
Islamic Ministry officials said this Friday that it was working on remedying the long delay in opening the mosque, and was engaged in discussions with the contractor.
Construction is in progress in three mosques in the capital Male’ City; the Maaveyo Mosque, a new mosque in Maafannu district, and Zikura Mosque.
Construction of the Zikura Mosque is currently at a standstill following a legal dispute regarding the agreement with the contractor - which has gone to court.
Meanwhile, the foundation work is complete in the new mosque in Maafannu district, and the contractor is currently working on the pillars.
The most progress has been made with Maaveyo Mosque, which is currently undergoing finishing touches such as installation of glass panels, installation of electric sets and switches, paintwork, carpeting and calligraphy.
Islamic Ministry spokesperson Ismail Afrah told Sun it was unlikely work on the new Maafannu Mosque will be complete in time for Ramadan, which falls on April; but that efforts were underway to open the Maaveyo Mosque ahead of Ramadan.
Maaveyo Mosque was demolished for reconstruction in early 2016. Islamic Ministry previously expected to be able open the mosque in time for Ramadan this year, but had to make temporary prayer arrangements at the mosque just for Ramadan with the delay in completion of the project.
